How is overtime pay calculated?
Overtime is usually paid at a higher rate than your normal hourly pay. Common rates are time-and-a-half (1.5 times your hourly rate) and double time (2 times). Multiply your hourly rate by the overtime multiplier, then by the number of overtime hours, to get your overtime pay.
Enter your basic hours as well to see your total pay for the week, combining normal hours at your standard rate with the overtime on top.
Your overtime rights
There is no automatic legal right to extra pay for overtime in the UK; it depends on your contract. However, your average pay must not fall below the National Minimum Wage, and there are limits on weekly working hours unless you have opted out.
Check your contract for the overtime rate that applies, as some employers pay overtime at your normal rate or offer time off in lieu instead.
Worked example
At £12 an hour, 5 hours of overtime at time-and-a-half (1.5×) pays 5 × £18 = £90 of overtime.
Add 37.5 basic hours at £12 (£450) and your total for the week is £540.
Frequently asked questions
Am I entitled to overtime pay?
Not automatically. Overtime pay depends on your contract, though your average pay must not drop below the National Minimum Wage.
What multiplier should I use?
Use the rate in your contract. Time-and-a-half (1.5×) and double time (2×) are common, but some employers pay the normal rate.
Is this before or after tax?
It shows gross overtime pay. Overtime is taxed like the rest of your pay, so use the salary calculator to see the take-home effect.
What about time off in lieu?
Some employers offer time off instead of extra pay. This calculator assumes you are paid for the overtime hours.
