How much should you tip in the UK?
Tipping in the UK is discretionary. In restaurants with table service, 10% to 12.5% is common, though many places now add a service charge automatically, so check the bill before adding more on top. Tipping is less usual in pubs, cafés and for takeaways.
This calculator works out the tip at your chosen percentage, adds it to the bill, and splits the total evenly between the number of people, so everyone pays their fair share.
Worked example
On an £80 bill with a 12.5% tip, the tip is £10 and the total is £90. Split between four people, that is £22.50 each.
If a service charge is already included, you would usually leave the tip percentage at zero to avoid paying twice.
Frequently asked questions
Do I still tip if there is a service charge?
Not usually. A service charge is effectively the tip, so you only need to add more if you feel the service was exceptional and you want to.
Is tipping expected in the UK?
It is appreciated but not obligatory, and less common than in some countries. Table-service restaurants are where it is most expected.
How do I split unevenly?
This calculator splits evenly. For an uneven split, work out each person’s share of the bill first, then apply the tip percentage.
Does the tip go to staff?
It depends on the venue’s policy. New UK rules require tips to be passed on to staff fairly, but practices vary, so cash directly to staff is one way to be sure.
